Configurators as a means to Leverage Customer-Centric Sustainable Systems - Evidence from the 3D-Printing Domain

Customer-centric strategies such as mass-customisation rely heavily on customer involvement co-designing products and services. In this sense, companies struggle to provide a better shopping experience by enabling technologies Industry 4.0 practices. Online configurators are an example of these that exist since decades but whose role in increasing value for the company is growing. This paper addresses integration sustainability preferences into configurators, with focus 3D-printing domain. The basic ideas research work are, one hand, can be enriched readable meaningful environmental indicators increase customers awareness based measurement impact their choices, other historical data about choices orders available within databases could support more sustainable management services portfolios. A case study-based was developed domain exhibiting high potential rapid prototyping customised thus helping speed-up production ramp-up time-to-market. main findings include initial proof-of-concept several opportunities further develop configurator.
